Soul Happy

Ephesians 4:18-19 (NIV)
“18 They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.”
Because of the ignorance and hardened hearts born of our sin nature, our understanding is darkened and we are separated from God, the source of true life.  We are insensitive to the weight of sin, given over to sensuality and indulgence in every impurity, with a continual lust for more.  Our sin nature tells us that these things will make us happy and successful.
Yet, as children of God living in his light, and as members of his body on whom the all the other members rely, we must strive against the impulses of our sinful nature.  The work of the Holy Spirit in us reveals the destructive consequences of being ruled by our sinful desires.
Has nurture and culture provided an understanding of happiness and success with which our souls do not fully resonate?
Could it be that nature and God’s design have shaped our souls to resonate with a different set of values?
Maybe deep soul happiness depends more on reshaping our values than on changing our bad behaviors done in pursuit of that which will never satisfy.
