The Tension of Servant Leadership

What would it mean for a Christian leader to lead as a servant or slave, keeping Jesus in mind as our pattern, remembering that he came to serve and not to be served? He said:

“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (NIV84, Mt 20:25–28)

How can we know we are putting those we serve and their needs first in every possible way, while at the same time holding clearly the mission and calling of God and not swerving from that? This is what Jesus did– exactly what the Father told him to say and do, no more and no less.

As a leader, what insights or illustrations might you use to help people put this challenge into practice? As a coach, what questions might you ask to help someone discover their best understanding of this teaching, its importance to them, and how to practice it accordingly?
